My 3-Day Water Fast Journey: Why I’m Doing It and How You Can Too by Miriam Rees

“Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen…?” – Isaiah 58:6

Today I begin Day 1 of a 3-day water fast, and I wanted to share both the why and the how behind it. Fasting has been a God-given tool for physical healing and spiritual renewal for centuries. As I walk through these next few days, I’ll be journaling my experience (which I’ll add below soon). But first, let’s talk about why a short fast like this can be so transformative.

What Is a 3-Day Water Fast?

A water fast means consuming only water — no food, coffee, or caloric beverages — for a set period of time.
Three days might sound short, but it’s long enough to give your digestive system a rest, trigger detox and repair processes, and bring your body back into balance.

This type of fast allows your body to shift into fat-burning and healing mode without the challenges of longer fasts, making it a wonderful reset for both body and soul.

The Benefits of a 3-Day Water Fast

🩸 1. Cellular Cleansing & Repair

After about 24 hours, your body begins autophagy — the natural process of breaking down old, damaged cells and rebuilding new ones. It’s like a deep internal clean-up that supports longevity and healing.

💪 2. Fat Burning & Metabolic Reset

When food intake stops, insulin levels drop, and your body turns to stored fat for energy. This helps stabilize blood sugar, support fat loss, and reset your metabolism.

🧠 3. Mental Clarity & Emotional Calm

Once your body adjusts, you may notice improved focus, a quiet mind, and emotional clarity. Fasting can help reduce inflammation in the brain and release the mental “fog” that often comes from food sensitivities or stress.

🙏 4. Spiritual Renewal

Fasting quiets the noise of life and creates space to hear God more clearly. It’s a time to align your physical hunger with a deeper spiritual hunger — for peace, guidance, and renewal in His presence.

❤️ 5. Rest for the Digestive System

A 3-day fast gives your gut time to rest and repair. Many people notice improved digestion and reduced bloating afterward.

How to Prepare for a 3-Day Water Fast

  1. Ease in gently. For 2–3 days beforehand, reduce sugar, caffeine, processed foods, and animal proteins.
  2. Stay hydrated. Drink filtered or mineral water generously throughout the fast — at least half your body weight (in ounces) daily.
  3. Rest and listen to your body. Energy levels may dip early on, so allow time for rest and reflection.
  4. Support detox pathways. Gentle walks, deep breathing, or Epsom salt baths can help your body flush toxins naturally.
  5. Pray and reflect. Set intentions for your fast — physical healing, clarity, or spiritual renewal — and journal what you experience each day.

Breaking the Fast Safely

When your 3 days are complete, break your fast slowly and intentionally. Start with small amounts of soft, healing foods — such as:

  • Fermented vegetables or sauerkraut
  • Vegetable broth
  • Mashed avocado
  • Lightly cooked zucchini or spinach
Avoid meats, raw veggies, nuts, or heavy fats at first. Give your body time to transition back to digesting food.

Final Thoughts

A 3-day water fast is a beautiful way to give your body a break, your mind clarity, and your spirit renewal. It’s not about deprivation — it’s about restoration. When we remove distractions and simplify, we make room for healing on every level.

“Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear.” – Isaiah 58:8
